Delicious Liverwurst Sandwiches

A rich and creamy classic — paired with onions, mustard, or pickles for the perfect balance of flavor.


Classic Ingredients (makes 2 sandwiches):

  • 6–8 slices liverwurst (braunschweiger or liver sausage)

  • 4 slices rye bread, pumpernickel, or sourdough (toasted or soft)

  • 2 tbsp Dijon or spicy brown mustard (or mayonnaise, if you prefer)

  • 4–6 slices red onion or sweet onion

  • Optional toppings:

    • Thin sliced dill pickles

    • Lettuce or arugula

    • Sliced tomato

    • Hard-boiled egg slices

    • Swiss cheese or mild cheddar


Instructions:

1. Prep the Bread:
Toast bread slices if you like extra texture, or keep them soft and fresh.

2. Spread & Layer:

  • Spread mustard (or mayo) on one or both slices of bread.

  • Layer liverwurst slices evenly.

  • Add onion rings, pickles, and any extras like lettuce or cheese.

3. Assemble & Serve:

  • Press the sandwich gently together.

  • Slice in half and serve with chips, pickles, or a side salad.


Optional Variations:

Creamy Liverwurst Spread (Great for Open-Faced or Crackers):

  • 4 oz liverwurst

  • 2 tbsp cream cheese or mayo

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • Mix until smooth. Spread on bread or crackers and top with onions or herbs.

German-Style Open-Faced Sandwich:

  • Dense rye or pumpernickel bread

  • Butter instead of mustard

  • Liverwurst + sliced onions + fresh parsley
